Until recently, when you typed “blog” most spell checkers flagged it as being spelled wrong.  Blog, short for weblog, can come in many forms and is the fastest growing form of writing in history.  Blog trackers have estimated more than 112 million blogs available for perusal.  A blog can be a comment on someone else’s website, personal page such as MySpace or a complete web site.  A blog can be a personal opinion, a news report, a series of discussions or a recount of experiences.  Blogs can serve many functions such as advertise a product or service as a testimonial or more direct.  They can serve as a diary or a way to express feelings about a situation, feeling or person.

Blogs have been responsible for successfully prosecuting defendants, workers losing their job of many years and a score of other life-changing consequences.  Many business newsletters which come through e-mail devote almost half the page to blogs of interest to business students and professionals.  They are even archived for catching up on past blogs or review.  There are many bloggers listed in magazines such as Fortune, as good enough to be on a list of ones in which to pay special attention.  It is also possible to be paid a handsome salary for blogging.

Blogs remind us of little-known events and tell us the truth about political events.  Most good bloggers are interested in the truth and take the time to research statements before writing them.  The good bloggers are careful in accusations and are usually well-founded in truth.  This has caused scandals such as the time Dan Rather presented documents on the news about the military service of President Bush.  The resulting blogs exposed the documents as fabricated with plenty of documented proof.

Blogs and their creators take the time to analyze events and statements made and reveal the real purpose behind the situation.  This can lead to threats and life-threatening situations as the exposed truth steps on someone’s toes. Bloggers can remain anonymous up to a point but this can also make readers bold in hateful reprisals until the bloggers fear for their personal safety.  This is one reason for the new term cyberstalking, and can be quite dangerous.

Blogs can help us invest our money and recommend good investments.  These types of blogs are not free and the creators are paid well for good investment strategies especially with the current economic conditions.  Most of these types of blogs come in the form of an e-newsletter and the user must pay for a subscription.  The blogger may offer a free trial subscription for a short period of time to get the user in the habit of looking forward to the next issue.

Other blogs which have become popular are those in which the blogger has researched businesses and found free merchandise or merchandise offered at substantial savings.  The blog includes step-by-step ways to successfully save money on food, products and services of interest to the user.  Some even provide coupons or a download to a grocery card.

The popularity and success of blogging cannot be ignored and the knowledge gained can be immensely rewarding for everyone.  It is best to act only on proven knowledge from reputable bloggers, some of which require detailed research.  If nothing else, blogs can be very entertaining.
